At two events in the Spring of 2025, Guiding Growth Co-Hosted public forums on ways to change Homer City Code, in order to improve access to attainable/affordable housing, and to protect key open spaces for public recreation and habitat. These two priorities were identified in public surveys conducted in by the Comp Plan team in 2024, but what exactly we do to work toward those goals is up for discussion.
Planning Commissioner and GIS Professional Charlie Barnewell gave a presentation on how tying City Code to GIS data--using GIS layers for soils, water, wetland areas, parking, traffic, etc. can make prioritizations around critical habitats and affordable housing more transparent and simpler to institute.
Linked below are some ideas for changes to Homer City Code that support public priorities of Open Space and Attainable housing, as well as some key statistics, and notes from the conversations.
